About Jim

Currently, I’m a PhD student at the University of Cambridge working in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Previous to that I was the University of Edinburgh, and graduated in 2009 with an M.Eng in Chemical Engineering.
I like watching and writing about movies, as you can maybe tell from the multiple blog posts on films. Having never studied film, I like to think I have written reviews and articles for the Cambridge Film Festival magazine in both 2010 (when it was named Festival Daily) and 2011 (the new TakeOne). This included a front page feature in the opening issue of 2010, and I completed a feature on the opening film, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 2011. This gave me an opportunity to review the film as well as interview John Hurt, Gary Oldman, Tomas Alfredson and Peter Straughan. In addition I wrote many other reviews and interviews during the course of the festival. I also hosted an audience Q&A session with the director of The Bengali Detective. Since then I have written reviews and features for The Cambridge Student newspaper, and have made some appearances on the Cambridge 105FM show Bums on Seats. A full catalogue (of that which is available online) can be found on this website.
I also follow a number of sports closely, mainly football and rugby union and I’ve had some writing on rugby 7s featured on sites other than my own. This also gave me the opportunity to hold a media pass for the IRB Edinburgh Sevens in 2009 and 2010 to do short interviews with the team coaches and assist with live text commentary.
Please feel free to contact me for anything to do with any film writing and sport writing.
